How an institute of this kind is sustained
Fundamental Acoustics Laboratories is a private, non-profit research institute. It is not a public company, and it is not affiliated with, nor funded by, any government agency.
Long-term listening is expensive, and it does not pay. There is no product at the end of a sixty-year recording, only a record. That the Laboratories have been able to keep that record without interruption is owed to a small group of patient, largely private supporters who understand that some questions are worth funding precisely because no one else will.
The Laboratories publish their scientific results openly. As a private foundation, they are not required to publish detailed financial statements, and they do not. What can be said is stated plainly here.
The Renner Endowment
Established at the founding and named for the first director, the endowment underwrites the Laboratories' core operations and its commitment to keeping the record open, in perpetuity, regardless of what it finds.
The Calder Ridge Trust
A long-standing private trust that maintains the field station and its instruments, and funds the preservation of the archive.
Private research grants
Competitive support from private foundations for specific programs, awarded on the strength of the Laboratories' published record.
Principal supporters
A small number of private benefactors provide sustaining support. Several have asked that their contributions not be publicly attributed, a request the Laboratories honor.
The Distributed Analysis Initiative
The single largest contribution to the Laboratories' work is not financial. Tens of thousands of volunteers donate idle computer time, performing analysis that would otherwise cost more than any endowment could bear.
Public stewardship
The annual reports are operating summaries, not detailed financial filings. They record continuity, contributor scale, archive work, support mix, and risks that affect the public record.

The Laboratories' analysis pipeline -- the machine layer that triages the volunteer results and flags candidate detections for human review -- is built and maintained in partnership with Stratis, Inc. The partnership dates to 2019 and is central to the Laboratories' ability to work at the scale the record now demands.
