FAL-AR-24

Operating Summary and Public Record, 2024

The 2024 report records a year of method consolidation: the coincidence workflow was formalized, the public report index was rebuilt around dockets and access states, and remote-station review became a standing annual procedure rather than a campaign-specific practice.

Research record

  • Published the separated-station coincidence method series.
  • Completed the current FA-0447 recurrence review and public abstract.
  • Re-baselined the hydrophone archive intake rules against NOAA source-backed training references.
  • Added docket fields to the report index so public records and reading-room requests could be reconciled.

Stewardship

The board renewed the charter language separating funding support from research conclusions.
Restricted gifts were declined where terms would have constrained publication timing.
The investment committee increased liquidity targets because several instrument replacements are no longer deferrable.

Archive and records

  • Records staff completed condition grading for the 1971 to 1978 VLF cabinet.
  • The hydrophone rebuild file was moved to researcher-request status after engineering review.
  • The public abstract template was revised to distinguish open reports from open abstracts.

Open operating risks

  • Long-lead instrument components remain hard to source without vendor substitutions.
  • A small number of public catalog entries depend on external source pages outside FAL control.
  • Remote station maintenance windows are increasingly weather-constrained.
