In August 1977, the Big Ear Radio Observatory recorded a strong narrow-band burst near the hydrogen line. It lasted about as long as the instrument could see that part of the sky, and then it did not repeat.
FAL keeps the Wow! signal in the public catalog because it is a near-perfect teaching case. It has the properties that make people want a conclusion and the absence of recurrence that forbids one.
Why the case still teaches
- The event was conspicuous enough to deserve continued study.
- The lack of recurrence limits what can be tested now.
- A clean single event is still a single event.
- Famous records require more restraint, not less.
That restraint is difficult in public. A named anomaly accumulates stories, illustrations, and confident summaries that exceed the data. FAL's catalog entry tries to reverse that habit by giving visitors the sparse facts first.
The right posture is neither dismissal nor romance. The right posture is recordkeeping, follow-up, and a refusal to make the data carry more than it can bear.
