On December 1, 2020, the Arecibo Observatory 305-meter telescope collapsed. The technical story is now public, but the institutional lesson is older: an instrument that records for decades is not replaced simply by building another instrument.

FAL records the loss because the continuity matters. A gap in the record is not an inconvenience. It is an event that cannot be reconstructed.
