A single burst leaves almost nothing to interrogate. A repeating source, however rare or irregular, lets a field build instruments around waiting. FRB 121102 did that for fast radio bursts.

The Cornell-reported work on FRB 121102's polarized bursts and magnetized environment is outside FAL's observing band, but the methodological consequence is familiar: recurrence is the difference between a curiosity and a subject.

What recurrence changes

  • Follow-up observations can be scheduled around a source rather than a rumor.
  • Independent instruments can test whether the behavior persists outside one pipeline.
  • A changing source can be measured across frequency, time, and environment.
  • Negative windows become part of the record instead of wasted time.
