The NANOGrav result is often described as a hum. The metaphor is useful, though the measurement is timing rather than sound: an all-sky background inferred from correlated changes in pulsars watched for fifteen years.
FAL does not claim kinship with the physics. We claim kinship with the patience. The record has to be long enough to outlast false patterns and stable enough that a very small real pattern can remain.
A useful public example
The public announcement gave non-specialist readers a way to understand correlation without pretending the measurement was simple. That matters to FAL because public-facing signal work often fails at exactly that point. The more interesting a result sounds, the more precisely the institution has to say what was measured.
