Among the value of keeping everything is that a recording made before it could be understood may be understood later. A field tape from 1966, unremarkable at the time, was reanalyzed by the Distributed Analysis Initiative using methods that did not exist when it was made.
Beneath the noise floor, the analysis recovered a persistent carrier that the original operators could not have heard. It matches, in frequency and character, a signal the Laboratories log to this day. The tape did not change. What changed was our ability to listen to it.
